Hot Tomali Creates Post-it Note Mural for the Holiday Season

VANCOUVER, December 23, 2008 — Yaletown Christmas shoppers will notice a rather large seasonal message as they complete their last-minute shopping. Local marketing firm Hot Tomali Communications created a gigantic mural across the windows of their fourth floor Yaletown offices at 1168 Hamilton Street to wish everyone a “Happy Holidays”. The mural, created by agency staff members, was built entirely out of thousands of Post-it notes that were strategically placed across the agency’s windows.

“As a company with a heavy emphasis on web and interactive development, it was fun to design a piece that literally needed to be built pixel-by-pixel,” says company president and creative director Thomas Stringham. “The layout for the 3000+ sticky notes was designed on a computer. The patterns were printed to scale for our staff to follow as they stuck the notes all over our windows.”

Hot Tomali shot time-lapse video during the four-hour production and then sped the footage up to create a 60-second YouTube clip that was circulated as a digital holiday greeting card for Hot Tomali’s clients and suppliers. As another homage to the digital metaphor in the pixel-inspired design, Hot Tomali chose to use a Christmas carol recorded in 8-bit audio as the soundtrack (music by Bit Jesus). The video has since been posted to YouTube under the title “Holidays Post-it Mural” and is now making its rounds as a viral video.

The mural will be left up until January 2, 2009. You can view the time-lapse video on Hot Tomali’s blog: www.hottomali.com/blog.
